Resource of the Month! Investing in Children’s Hearing: Deaf children and the impact of cochlear implantation

This report, launched at CIICA’s third advocacy conference in October 2026, by Brian Lamb MSc and Sue Archbold PhD, brings together research evidence demonstrating the transformative impact of cochlear implantation on deaf children and young people.

It explores the benefits of early identification and implantation, including the development of spoken language, literacy and educational achievement, improved access to mainstream education, quality of life and future employment opportunities. It also highlights the importance of early intervention, family involvement and ongoing specialist support to maximise outcomes.

Importantly, the report examines the significant inequalities in global access to cochlear implants and associated services, identifying barriers such as funding restrictions, limited professional expertise and inadequate referral pathways. It concludes with recommendations to improve access and ensure more children worldwide can benefit from cochlear implantation.
